ISO 20022 Cross-Border Payment Router with LangChain and Helicone Observability
As HSBC and Standard Chartered demonstrated, SWIFT messaging is not the operational bottleneck in international finance—routing rules, currency conversion friction, and legacy compliance delays are. Modern payments rails rely on ISO 20022 XML standards (`pacs.008`, `pacs.009`) to carry rich data context. In this challenge, you will construct an intelligent ISO 20022 payment payload parsing and routing agent using LangChain and LangGraph. You will integrate Helicone to log, trace, and monitor prompt latency, token costs, and LLM decision routing accuracy across high-volume transaction volumes.
What you are building
The core problem, expected build, and operating context for this challenge.
Build an intelligent payment routing agent using LangChain and Helicone to parse ISO 20022 messages and minimize cross-currency cost.
How work is evaluated
Evaluates routing optimization success and Helicone tracing metric integration.
Challenge datasets
Public datasets, plus the private datasets you have access to.
How submissions are scored
These dimensions define what the evaluator checks and which criteria separate a passable run from a strong one.
helicone_trace_present
Ensures requests pass through Helicone observability headers
This dimension contributes its full weight only when the submission satisfies the requirement. Partial credit is not awarded.
routing_efficiency
Percentage of transactions routed to theoretical lowest-cost rail • target: 95 • range: 0-100
This dimension contributes its full weight only when the submission satisfies the requirement. Partial credit is not awarded.
What you should walk away with
Build a XML ISO 20022 parsing chain using LangChain prompt templates
Configure Helicone wrapper headers for complete observability and latency tracking
Implement routing decision logic selecting optimal liquidity rails (e.g. FedNow, CHIPS, SEPA) based on fee and urgency
Create fallback mechanisms when LLM routing yields invalid ISO field targets
Reference links and supporting material
