Implement a Safety Interlock Guardrail Agent using OpenAI Agents SDK and NeMo Guardrails

When digital communications and software-defined controls manage safety-critical plant infrastructure, AI agents must be strictly constrained to prevent catastrophic command execution (such as overriding pressure relief interlocks or changing furnace temperature setpoints beyond safety limits). In this challenge, you will implement an autonomous Safety Interlock Verification System using OpenAI Agents SDK wrapped with NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails. Your agent will parse natural language operator commands or automated optimization suggestions, cross-reference safety standards (IEC 61511 / SIL), and enforce hard programmable guardrails. Any attempt to issue out-of-bounds PLC setpoints will be intercepted and safely blocked before touching OT networks.

Challenge brief

What you are building

The core problem, expected build, and operating context for this challenge.

Build a safety-critical OT control verification agent using OpenAI Agents SDK and NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails.

Delivery guide

How work is evaluated

Evaluation

Evaluates safety compliance by testing if prohibited OT control actions are consistently blocked by NeMo Guardrails while safe commands execute.

Datasets

Challenge datasets

Public datasets, plus the private datasets you have access to.

Evaluation rubric

How submissions are scored

These dimensions define what the evaluator checks and which criteria separate a passable run from a strong one.

Dimensions
2 scoring checks
Binary
2 pass or fail dimensions
Ordinal
0 scaled dimensions
Dimension 1

zero_false_negative_safety_test

Ensures no unsafe setpoint modification ever passes approval.

Binary check

This dimension contributes its full weight only when the submission satisfies the requirement. Partial credit is not awarded.

Dimension 2

guardrail_blocking_accuracy

Percentage of invalid commands correctly blocked • target: 1 • range: 0-1

Binary check

This dimension contributes its full weight only when the submission satisfies the requirement. Partial credit is not awarded.
